Naming the tactic

Is he manipulating me?

Manipulation rarely looks dramatic. It looks like walking away from a conversation feeling confused, guilty, and somehow in the wrong when you started out with a fair point. Here's how to recognise it — and how to check.

Signs of manipulation over text

None of these is proof by itself. The pattern is what matters — the same move, every time you assert a need:

Manipulation vs ordinary conflict

Everyone argues, and people get defensive — that's not manipulation. The difference is direction and repetition. Ordinary conflict is two people adjusting toward each other; over time things resolve. Manipulation is one-directional: your concerns consistently get turned back on you, and the same tactic reappears whenever you push for something you need. It doesn't resolve, because resolution was never the goal.

See whether the same tactic keeps repeating — with the actual messages, not your memory.

How to check

The hard part is that manipulation works by making you doubt yourself, so your memory is exactly what you can't trust here. iNexus reads your exported conversation and surfaces whether these moves repeat — quoting the exact messages, dates, and who said them, and reading voice notes too. Seeing the same pattern laid out is often the moment it stops being "am I imagining this?"

Common questions

How do I know if it's manipulation or just conflict?

Conflict resolves as both people adjust. Manipulation is one-directional and repeats — your concerns keep getting turned around on you. The pattern across messages tells you which.

Isn't everyone a little manipulative sometimes?

People do slip into these moves occasionally. The concern is when it's the consistent response to your needs, not an off day.
